THE CNC SPECIALIST PROGRAM

A STRONG NEED FOR CNC PERSONNEL
A survey of the manufacturing employment opportunities in the metropolitan area reveals that there is a strong need for personnel with advanced manufacturing skills. Available positions include setup and process personnel, equipment operators, CNC programmers, and managers. The analytical nature of the required skills makes it difficult to develop with on-the-job training as a sole source. Our programs are ideally suited to provide the technical training required for such positions. There is no equivalent curriculum at any college in the New York - Long Island region. The primary purpose of our programs is to prepare you for immediate employment and job advancement upon completing the CNC Specialist program.

THE CNC SPECIALIST PROGRAM
This qualification is awarded upon successful completion of a minimum of 90 hours concentrating on Computer Numerical Control Technology. It is designed for personnel interested in job re-training, skills enhancing and learning the latest Manufacturing Technology.
Students who do not wish to take the full program can take individual courses, subject to space availability.
PREREQUISITE
Students accepted into this program are expected to have a manufacturing background.
COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
To become a CNC Specialist, students must take and pass subject mastery examinations in each of the required courses. The mastery exam concept allows a student to re-take an examination until a passing grade of 80 percent is achieved.
COURSES REQUIRED
Computer Numerical Control of Machine Tools. CAMS 101
Learn the basic concepts of NC and CNC technology; traditional and contemporary CNC hardware configurations; advantages and disadvantages of the new technology.
Topics will include Computer Numerical Control (CNC) concepts. Modern machine tool controls. An overview of CNC shop activities. An introduction to setup procedures of CNC machining and turning centers. Cutting tool selection feed and speed selection and calculation. Mathematics for CNC programming. An introduction to Word Address programming.
Manual Part Programming for CNC Machining Centers. CAMS 102
This course is a thorough examination of principles of CNC programming of Machining Centers; it's applications and planning. It is concerned with the actual detailed description of how to do manual programming.
Topics will include programming hole operations; linear programming; programming circular profiles; cutter compensation and subprogram programming.
Fundamental Concepts of CNC Lathe Programming CAMS 103
Learn how to program and setup a modern Turning Center. Find out the latest features available to the setup person by working on projects being tested on our State-of-the-art CNC lathe equipped with a Fanuc-OT Control and a touch probe.
Topics will include an introduction to the CNC lathe, fundamental concepts of CNC lathe programming, techniques and fixed cycles.
Introduction to CAD/CAM
(Mastercam) CAMS 104
Note: This course requires 2 modules.
This course introduces the student to the basics of Mastercam, its layout and functionality, data entry methods, file types, and system requirements. You will learn how to create, modify, translate, and manage 2D geometry such as points, lines and arcs in Cartesian and polar coordinates. You'll learn how to create complete part programs utilizing contour, pocket, and mill. Prove-out of the created programs is done with Back plot and Nsee-2000. Then the programs are post processed to the controller.
Aspects of lathe programming are also covered.

COURSE PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

The student will have a working knowledge of the history and application of CNC machine tools and demonstrate this knowledge by scoring greater than 75% on a
written test. |

Given an engineering drawing of a simple part with linear features such as slots and linear edges, steps and drill holes, the student will be able to generate a CNC program that will successfully machine the part. |
 |
Given a correct program, the student will be able to set-up and operate a Fadal machining center or a Bridgeport CNC milling machine resulting in a correctly machined part. |
 |
Given an engineering drawing of a part to be machined on a CNC lathe the student will be able to write a program (manual or computer assist) to do simple to medium complexity OD and ID operations. |
 |
The student will be able to correctly and safely operate the CNC lathe producing geometrically correct parts. |
 |
The student will be able to calculate the proper feeds and speeds required to optimize the process of milling or turning on a CNC machine. |
 |
The student will understand the criteria for selection of cutting tools, coolants, fixtures. |
